Hi there! This is my first post on this forum! When comparing numbers/quantities, what is (are) the correct adjective(s) to use? 2 is larger, bigger, higher, greater than 1? Does it make any difference if one adds a unit of measure to the number? 2 kg is larger, bigger, higher, greater than...
As so often with this sort of question, we probably wouldn’t phrase it that way in the first place. I’m comparing A and B in terms of their functionality. I’m comparing the functionality of A and B. I’m comparing the functionality of A against that of B.
"The better" is a superlative that only applies when comparing two people or things. "The best" is not wrong when comparing just two, but "the better" makes clear that the comparison is between two only.
If you say on the form "I think Fred is a very good candidate", you are inevitably comparing Fred to somebody else or some other people, and you are probably not comparing him to the children at your child's infant school! Who exactly are you comparing Fred to?
I saw this in a book, someone was comparing two sisters who are of different characters. How will we translate this in french ? Is it "jour et nuit " but then does not "jour et nuit" mean night and day? Can anyone help me?
Also, if you don't want to sound bookish, in casual speech use veľa, rather than mnoho or mnohí. Veľa ľudí chce peniaze. (only 3rd person sg) Do you mean that in casual speech “mnoho” is generally used more rarely comparing to “veľa”, or is it just as regards ľudí/people?
